Level Guidelines

Our Sheet Music Plus levels are designed to help you select music in the correct difficulty level. Each piece that includes a Sheet Music Plus level has been carefully evaluated to ensure that it follows the level guidelines below. Since each individual piece is reviewed by hand, only a small subset of titles currently includes level information. However, we are constantly reviewing additional titles to expand our selection of graded music.

  • SMP Primer Level (Early Elementary): Very beginning music. Five-finger positions with no chords and almost no hand position movement.

  • SMP Level 1 (Elementary): Very little hand movement and the introduction of 3 note chords.

  • SMP Level 2 (Late Elementary): 5-finger patterns still used but position changes are more frequent including one octave scale passages. Some 3 note chords.

  • SMP Level 3 (Early Intermediate): Independent movement of the left hand. Multiple chords in a measure, and the introduction of triplets.

  • SMP Level 4 (Intermediate): Introduction of 4-note chords and sixteenth notes. Hand movement covering 2 to 3 octaves.

  • SMP Level 5 (Intermediate): Seventh chords and melodies in both hands. More difficult note reading with ledger lines above and below the staff.

  • SMP Level 6 (Late Intermediate): 4-note chords in both hands with large stretches and leaps. Irregular and complicated rhythms.

  • SMP Level 7 (Late Intermediate): 4 to 5-note chords in both hands and scales in octaves in both hands.

  • SMP Level 8 (Early Advanced): 4 and 5-note chords spanning more than an octave. Intricate rhythms and melodies.

  • SMP Level 9 (Advanced): All types of major, minor, diminished, and augmented chords spanning more than an octave. Extensive scale passages.

  • SMP Level 10 (Advanced): Very advanced level, very difficult note reading, frequent time signature. changes, virtuosic level technical facility needed.
